If you have more than one day in Springfield, this park is worth a stop. You can see the town where Lincoln spent some years getting established. But if your time is limited, stick to the sites in Springfield, which provide much more in-depth information.

It is a beautiful Park. They have old buildings that you can see in and go through. Back in the time when President Lincoln was a just a postmaster. They do reenactments on different occasions. They have a gift shop with Old Time toys and clothes and even coonskin hats.

This is a great state park dedicated to educating about the 'way of life' back in the 1800s and a young Abe Lincoln's beginnings. I came here as a kid to visit, and then to the Pioneer daycamp and and loved it - an excellent place to bring kids. You really do feel like you are transported to a different time - highly recommend. Also, their gift shop was noteworthy.

PS - Just saw the admission fee is a suggested donation of $10 for a family, and cheaper for just adults. That's awesome!

We loved going back in time. Hearing about the 1800's. President Lincoln's post office. Quilting, spinning wool. Very educational.

Definitely worth a trip and the state park's support.

New Salem was well worth the visit if you want to explore A. Lincoln's roots. It has a very nice visitor center with a lot of historical data, store, and small cafe. There are many restored cabins and buildings to give you that 1830's feel of how life was on the prarie.

It was so interesting to walk through New Salem, but it would have been much better if more information were provided. Signage was minimal. There were interpreters in only a few of the buildings. Some of them were knowledgeable and clearly wanted to help visitors have a good experience. The others (maybe newer, inexperienced people?) gave no information unless asked.
